There are plenty of simpler games out there that still allow you to think strategically without having to manage an entire civilization. Where else are you going to get all the wood, silver, and gold you need to outfit and compensate an army? Once you’ve built your civilization up enough, it’s time to attack and conquer your enemies! Welcome to Strategy Games Galore!Īs much as we love Herzog Zwei and the many RTS titles that followed throughout the 90s and 2000s like the Age of Empires series, Starcraft, and tons of other popular titles, RTS is just a sub-genre. It’s not all about war, though – you still have hard-working villagers to feed. In these games, you manage a civilization and/or army by building military bunkers, training units to fight, and increasing your population. A modest, but revolutionary little game called Herzog Zwei, released for the Sega Genesis in 1989, kicked off what is now known as the “RTS” or real-time strategy genre.
The online strategy game boom, however, didn’t start until the late 80s. Every time you ask yourself, “What do I need to do to gain an advantage over my enemy?” the answer involves some form of strategy or another. The list could go on but it's obvious how lacking Switch's strategy library is compared to PC, mobiles, other consoles or, well, even the Nintendo DS.Technically, if you count actual war as a game of strategy, then strategy games have been around for millennia.
ONLINE STRATEGIC WAR GAMES SERIES
Tropico series (it's available on other consoles, so why not on the Switch yet?).
ONLINE STRATEGIC WAR GAMES PC
Majesty (this has been available for mobiles beside the PC versions, too).Age of Empires (Nintendo DS had a turn-based version, PS2 had the good old II, they're remaking them now anyway).King's Bounty (a bit similar to HoMM, an obvious second choice).Heroes of Might&Magic series (literally any of them - III HD had been published on phones and tablets anyway).I love strategy games but only 1 is on Switch of my all-time favorites (Civ 6). And if you're looking specifically for card-based strategy games, we've got a separate list of the Best Switch Card And Deck-Building Games. Below, we've collected together a selection of our very favourites covering all types of strategy and tactics games.
ONLINE STRATEGIC WAR GAMES PLUS
Planning a multi-turn offensive in a 4X game like Civilization or outfitting your party with optimal gear in a Strategy RPG like Fire Emblem: Three Houses can take much trial-and-error and many of us can only grab small windows of gaming time.įortunately, the portability of Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED - plus their sleep function - makes them ideal machines to help squeeze these brilliant games into hectic lifestyles, and Switch has a great selection of strategy and tactics games available at retail and on the eShop. Strategy and tactics games by their very nature require deep thought and careful consideration, and many gamers these days often find it hard to embark on epic multi-hour campaigns in a single sitting.
